Rose of Rosebud Studio is an illustrator and mother of four. She enjoys drawing almost as much as she enjoys spending time with her family, and thinks it is important to get messy. Here’s what she had to say to us:
BBP: Describe your style in as few words as you can-
Rose: Organic and natural with a whimsical touch.
BBP: What is your creative process like?
Rose: Sometimes I will see something that inspires me and other times I will sit down and draw whatever my pen feels. When I draw this way I find myself in another world. When I’m happy with my finished drawing I then continue to work on my designs in illustrator adding colors and textures until I feel it’s a finished piece.
BBP: Do you always work from the same a spot – a studio, a particular desk, etc. – or do you move around?
Rose: I have an art desk in my home office.
BBP: How has your style changed over the years?
Rose: My art has become more free-handed and less planned out. I am able to go with the flow of the drawing by trusting myself.
BBP: Tell us about the colors you use- how do you choose them, what inspires them?
Rose: I tend to use more natural earth tones. I choose the earth tones because the colors found in nature is what inspires me.
BBP: Did you always know that you wanted to design for kids and families?
Rose: I have always known I love to design. When I became a mother of four young children I became immersed in more children themed art. This is when I began to design more with a whimsical/fairytale style.
BBP: Do you think art is important for kids? Why?
Rose: Yes of course it’s very important because art is a beautiful teaching tool and a way for self-expression.
BBP: Tell us about your favorite one of your designs on the site: Which one is it? Why? What inspired it?
Rose: My favorite piece of art on this site is my forest bunny. I am pleased with the design because it can easily be for an adult as well as a child. My love of fairytales inspired this design.
BBP: Do you have kids? Tell us about them!
Rose: Sure do! I have four amazing kids! 3 boys and 1 girl. They are silly and keep my days full of laughter. I love being a mommy.
BBP: How did you decorate their nursery?
Rose: I loved decorating their nursery. With my daughter I painted a tree mural on her wall with pink flowers. For the boys I did zoo animals on each wall.
BBP: What was the most surprising thing about having children?
Rose: How unnecessary it is to think that your house needs to stay perfectly clean all the time.
BBP: Any advice for new moms or dads?
Rose: My advice would be to enjoy them and make a mess with them. They are only young once.
BBP: Any pets?
Rose: No pets right now, someday we will though.
BBP: Where did you grow up?
Rose: I grew up on a small dead end road in Verona NY.
BBP: What was your most prized possession as a kid? Tell us about it!
Rose: I would have to say my coloring book and crayons. I would take them everywhere!
BBP: What did your room look like growing up?
Rose: Growing up I never kept my room the same. I was always changing it. My mother encouraged me to be creative. She was always helping me paint just about anything I could imagine. I have had it all. I think my favorite was when she let me paint my own flower rug on my floor.
BBP: Do you have a favorite quote or saying? What is it and why?
Rose: “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” I’ve always loved this quote. To me it means don’t worry what other think of you just be you.
BBP: Favorite movie?
Rose: Drop Dead Fred – best movie ever.
BBP: Beach or mountains?
Rose: I do love the beach, but if I had to pick I’d have to say the mountains.
BBP: Pencil or pen?
Rose: I would have to say pen. I use pen on all my work.
BBP: Coffee or tea?
Rose: I definitely would choose coffee over tea any day.
